RESEARCH & DEVELOPNMENT
Jivalogics carries out extensive Breeding research over 30 acres of research farms. We also have polyhouses and nethouses for our projects. Testing of our new products is carried out over multilocation centers all across India.
We always ensure that our customers derive the maximum benefit and obtain highest returns on their efforts. That is why we have laid emphasis on research and development of new hybrids.
The result of our research is a long line of achievements that have advanced the cause of agriculture time and time again. We have got prominent research varieties of Paddy,Chilli and vegetable seeds.
Since plant breeding requires highly qualified technical personnel Jivalogics possesses a team of talented, well-experienced breeders and scientists to undertake research activities. They are backed by strong R&D facilities and are working for the development of new hybrids under strict quality supervision. To take this cause forward, we have developed grow-out test facilities besides germination and moisture test, in our research farms.
We are also looking for foreign collaborations so that we can bring the latest technology and put it to the use of Indian Agriculture. Company also plans to enhance its research facilities and creating a separate team for research.
Enhancement of Agricultural/Medicinal Plants or Products with Proprietary Technology
Jivalogics has shown, through collaborations with its partners, that its proprietary genomic technology significantly enhances the productivity of agricultural products. These benefits have been realized in the form of increased seed yield, increased plant size, increased leaf size, increased root size, extended viability of perishable produce due to a delay in post-harvest senescence and delayed premature senescence caused by diseases and external stresses (drought, heat, salt, disease, cold, etc.). Individually, each of these traits is critically important in a wide variety of agricultural products. Our technology would allow the traits to be implemented simultaneously.
Our technology is based on the finding that cell death, whether it occurs naturally at the end of the lifespan of a plant or plant tissue or prematurely in response to stress, is universally triggered by several genes acting together. Silencing the expression of these genes greatly reduces the negative effects of disease and environmental stress while allowing a plant to grow more efficiently and therefore more robustly. These genes were discovered, isolated and characterized by us and have since been thoroughly protected internationally through aggressive patent strategy. Since identifying the genes, which are found universally in all plant species, our company has endeavored to quantify the beneficial traits which are conveyed by silencing them. Representative data for a wide range of crops are shown below, both graphically and qualitatively.
SEED YIELD
Enhancement of seed yield is of vital importance in large scale cereals and agronomic crops. The benefit of a plant which produces more seed without necessitating increased manpower or economic output is immediately obvious. Our technology presents the end user with the prospect of having agronomic crops that are 100% more efficient than unenhanced crops. The following data are from Arabidopsis thaliana, a plant which produces oil seeds analogous to those of canola, an important oil producing plant. Our two test lines in this experiment exhibited approximately 66% and 100% increases in volume of seed harvested in relation to the wild type (control) plant. There were 26 plants from each line tested to ensure statistical significance.
INCREASE IN BIOMASS
In many cases, the efficiency of a crop is determined by the size of the plant. In leafy crops, for example, it is desirable to have a larger plant which maximizes the amount of useful produce. Jivalogics’s technology lends itself to yielding larger plants, because the plants do not waste vital energy fending off death from environmental stresses. This allows them to devote their photosynthetic energy toward growing larger. The following data are from Arabidopsis (roots) and tomato (leaves). This shows that root growth is more vigorous, allowing for greater nutrient uptake, and that the leaves are larger which yields a larger harvest. In both cases, the control plant is on the left. The leaf picture depicts leaves from plants that are 13 weeks old.
INCREASED GROWTH RATE
Plants which grow more quickly can be harvested at an earlier date and are likely to bear fruit and seed more quickly. This trait gives an obvious and immediate competitive advantage to the faster growing plants. This advantage could be realized in a wide variety of commercial species, to include the earlier harvest of horticultural crops and larger trees at a much earlier point in time. The following data are for tomato plants, which are biologically similar to most tree species in that they have “woody” stems and grow in much the same manner. These were planted at the same time. The Jivalogics plant is on the left and the untreated plant is on the right. This represents 9.5 weeks of growth.
RESISTANCE TO BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL DISEASE
Plant pathogens remain a significant problem across all agricultural species. It is estimated that between 12 and 15% of all agricultural products are lost due to various pathogens (Source: UN Food and Agriculture Organization). In addition there are monetary and environmental costs associated with chemical applications necessary to combat many of these pathogens. Our technology combats the resultant senescence brought on by the bacterial and fungal infections which strike so many crops. The following data show canola leaves which are resistant to fungal pathogen-caused senescence.
These pictures show canola leaves 5 days after infection with the Sclerotinia fungus. In the Jivalogics leaf on the right there has been no spread of the fungus outside of the inoculation area; the rest of the leaf remains protected from senescence brought on by the fungus. However, in the control leaf on the left the inoculation site is surrounded by dead cells (the brown area) and dying cells (the yellow area).
RESISTANCE TO ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS
Environmental stresses impact every commercially important crop in the world. It is estimated that extreme environmental stress accounts for losses of $90 billion worldwide (Source: U.S. Public Interest Resource Group and The Red Cross). Drought is of obvious concern because it is directly linked to reduced crop yield and quality, and drives up costs due to the need for irrigation and related land management. The forestry industry is especially aware of the benefits of drought resistance because a large portion of newly planted seedlings are annually lost due to drought stress. The following data show plants which have been subjected to extreme drought conditions for 20 days.
The Jivalogics plants on the left show a bit of mild leaf browning, but no other harmful effects of the extreme drought conditions are noticeable. The wild type plants on the right are dead. They have fully senesced and are not viable in any way
Post Harvest Viability (Shelf Life)
One of the major difficulties plaguing the worldwide agriculture industry is the ability to get fresh produce to market in a timely fashion. It is estimated that 25% of the world’s horticultural crops are lost between harvest and consumption (Source: International Society of Horticultural Science). The ability to minimize this would ensure more efficient distribution of produce, coupled with a superior end product. Many of the technologies in place today materially affect consumer traits (e.g. taste, texture), so that the consumer is delivered a long lasting, but inferior, product. Our technology would alleviate the need for these expensive technologies, which include cold storage and ethylene gassing. The following data show enhanced post harvest viability of tomato fruit.
The control fruit (rows marked WT for wild-type) show obvious wrinkling and softening by day 14 and are fully spoiled by day 28. Our enhanced tomatoes (rows marked TP2) show no spoilage even at day 28 and remain firm through to day 44 and beyond. It is important to note that the TP2 tomatoes show no difference in taste or texture, only the significant enhancement in post harvest viability
